Wall Street Competing with Main Street for Real Estate Investments

Published on Feb 28, 2013
The business of buying-and-fixing up and renting houses has long been dominated by local
mom-and-pop investors. But over the past two years its become one of
the hottest investments on Wall Street.
Dozens of pension funds, and private-equity firms, such as Blackstone and Colony Capital are racing to buy up homes in struggling markets.
And the newest twist? Theyre sometimes using money from foreign co-investors.

But, Some community groups are complaining. Institutional investor/owners are squeezing out local home buyers and mom and pop investors.
