The hot "talker" of the evening...
The Senate's most liberal Republican (Olympia Snowe) and its most conservative Republican (Jim DeMint) have teamed up for an op-ed endorsing a balanced budget amendment, which they say is the only way to guarantee fiscal stability, and which they say all 47 GOP Senators endorse.
Why a constitutional amendment?
If Congress increases our national debt ceiling next month without permanent, structural budget reforms, we will signal to taxpayers and bond markets alike that Washington is still in denial. Whatever agreement is reached, everyone will know that future Congresses are not obligated to follow it. As a result, the only way to compel lawmakers to maintain their responsibility forever is a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution.
We'd put the odds of a balanced budget amendment being included in the debt ceiling deal at approximately 0%, given how radical of a proposal this is.
